Description
Blood pressure represents a major global health concern; more than one fourth of the population is affected by high blood pressure. Endocrine disorders are common illnesses and some of them may lead to elevated blood pressure, among which thyroid diseases are of high prevalence and often overlooked, especially in mild cases.
Atherosclerotic changes resulting from lipid abnormalities due to thyroid dysfunction also affect the vasculature and can cause elevated blood pressure and Blood pressure is altered across the entire spectrum of thyroid disease. The effects of hyperthyroidism include increased cardiac output, contractility, tachycardia, widened pulse pressure, decreased systemic vascular resistance, and increased basal metabolic rate.
Thyroid diseases affect the cardiovascular system, their negative impact and causative role in the development of hypertension.
Effects of thyroid diseases on blood pressure:-
Hypothyroidism has been linked to a higher risk of diastolic hypertension. The induction of hypothyroidism by radioiodine therapy dramatically elevated diastolic blood pressure in 40 thyrotoxic individuals, with diastolic blood pressure exceeding 90 mm Hg in 16 (40%) of the patients. The systolic and diastolic blood pressures in these individuals were much lower after restoring euthyroidism with thyroxine administration, with diastolic pressures falling below 90 mm Hg in nine of the 16 patients. Measurements of serum thyroxine and thyrotropin concentrations in 688 consecutive hypertensive patients referred for evaluation and treatment of their hypertension were used to determine the prevalence of hypothyroidism. In 25 (3.6%) of the patients, hypothyroidism was discovered. Thyroid hormone replacement therapy restores normal serum thyroxine and thyrotropin levels.
Impact of Thyroid disorder in terms blood pressure:-
Thyroid disorder is the reason for high blood pressure, adjustments in diet and lifestyle won’t resolve the problem and medications may not be effective. If a patient’s blood pressure does not respond to conventional treatment, a doctor can perform tests to see if the thyroid is the cause.
