Description

Over 150 years ago, Charles Darwin, while postulating his seminal work on evolutionary theory, observed that “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” It holds today too, especially in the digital age that has dramatically revolutionized the way people relate, communicate, and transact with each other. Transformation is nothing but accepting change, adapting to it, and managing it to survive and thrive in a dynamic and constantly evolving environment.
What is Digital Transformation?
Over the past two decades, the evolution of digital technologies at an unprecedented pace has disrupted, in a largely positive manner, the way the world engages interacts, and transacts. Digital Transformation, within the context of an organisation or business, can be defined as the development, adoption, and deployment of various technologies to optimise existing or create new processes, cultures, and customer experiences. It is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), automation, data, and analytics within an enterprise. While it isn’t a new concept, its importance and criticality to a business were shockingly revealed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Winston Churchill once said, “We should never waste a good crisis.”, and most organisations demonstrated remarkable agility to adapt to the pandemic by adopting digital transformation initiatives to ensure survival in an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous environment (VUCA world).
Digital transformation impacts all organisational functions, be it HR, Finance, Operations, Sales, Marketing, or Manufacturing. But digital transformation isn’t just about technology, it’s about the people too. Digital transformation represents a challenge as well as an opportunity, and organisations, as well as their people, need to be aligned, equipped, and skilled to be effective and successful.
At this point, it is also pertinent to clarify the difference between digitisation, digitalisation, and digital transformation. Digitisation is the conversion and storage of analog data into a digital format on a digital platform. Digitalisation is the use of digitisation and other digital technologies to establish digital processes. Digital transformation goes beyond digitisation and digitalisation to translate into a holistic approach that leverages technology to make business processes simpler, faster, and better for employees, and deliver innovative products and services to its consumers.
While there is much written about generational differences and the classification of people according to their year of birth, there is no exact or official definition of when a generation begins or ends. The criteria determining a generational changeover are just as amorphous. For this article, the current working population in the organised sector can be divided into three groupings: Generation X, Generation Y or Millennials, and Generation Z or Centennials.
Generation X (1965 - 1980): Considered the bridge between the baby boomers and the millennials, Gen X was when capitalism took root and consumerism took off. Not digital natives because of limited technology, Gen X adapted easily to the Internet and subsequent technological advances. Teamwork and fostering trusting working relationships are also one of their hallmarks.
Currently aged between 42 and 57, a digital transformation programme will help Gen X working professionals come up to speed with current technologies and transition seamlessly into a data-driven digitalised work culture.
